What the doctor assesses

What abdominal ultrasound includes

In one examination the doctor reviews the abdominal and urinary organs: assesses size, structure and contours, describes any changes found and, if needed, advises which specialist to see next.

  • Liver ultrasound — Grand Medical

    Liver

Size, tissue structure, signs of fatty change and focal lesions.

  • Gallbladder ultrasound — Grand Medical

    Gallbladder and bile ducts

Stones, kinks, wall thickness and signs of bile stasis.

  • Pancreas ultrasound — Grand Medical

    Pancreas

Size, contours, structure and signs of inflammation.

  • Spleen ultrasound — Grand Medical

    Spleen

Size, shape and structure of the organ.

  • Abdominal aorta ultrasound — Grand Medical

    Abdominal aorta

Assessment of the aortic diameter and detection of signs of aneurysmal dilatation in the segments accessible to examination.

  • Kidney ultrasound — Grand Medical

    Kidneys

Position, size, the calyces and renal pelvis, stones and cysts.

  • Urinary tract ultrasound — Grand Medical

    Urinary tract

Urine outflow and signs of dilatation of the renal pelvis and ureter.

  • Bladder ultrasound — Grand Medical

    Bladder

Filling, wall, contents and residual urine volume.

  • Prostate ultrasound — Grand Medical

    Prostate

Size and structure of the prostate — in the extended package for men.

Two examination options. The basic one covers everything listed above except the prostate. The extended package additionally includes the prostate — prices below.

Ultrasound helps detect changes and decide on next steps, but it does not replace a consultation with the relevant specialist or other methods — gastroscopy, CT, MRI or lab tests, if they are needed.

Indications

When to have an abdominal ultrasound

An abdominal ultrasound can be done on a doctor’s referral or on your own initiative — for example, if you have symptoms or need to check previously found changes. No referral is required to book.

  • Abdominal discomfortHeaviness or pain in the right upper abdomen, bloating, a bitter taste in the mouth, nausea, intolerance of fatty food.
  • Changes in lab resultsLiver function tests, bilirubin, amylase, changes in the urine test.
  • Kidney and bladder symptomsLower back pain, suspected stones, frequent or difficult urination.
  • Men's healthElevated PSA, night-time urination, a feeling of incomplete emptying — the extended package with the prostate.
  • Follow-up over timePreviously found cysts, stones or liver changes — to see whether they are changing.
  • On a doctor's instruction or as part of a Check-upA family doctor, gastroenterologist, urologist or internist may refer you for an ultrasound; the examination is also part of health check programmes.

Sudden severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood or an inability to pass urine are not reasons for a scheduled appointment. In these cases call emergency medical services immediately on 113 (or 112).

Step by step

How the appointment works

The examination is done through the skin of the abdomen and takes about 20 minutes. Here is what a visit looks like, from booking to the report.

  1. Booking

Online, by phone or on WhatsApp, without a referral. The administrator will explain how to prepare and how much time to allow.

  2. Preparation

Come on an empty stomach and with a full bladder — this lets the doctor see all the organs in one visit.

  3. The examination

You lie on the couch and uncover your abdomen. The doctor applies gel and moves the probe over the skin. Painless, about 20 minutes.

  4. The report

You receive the report and images on the day of the examination; if needed, we will refer you to the relevant specialist at the clinic.

What the patient feels. The examination is painless: no injections and no anaesthesia. You may feel the coolness of the gel and light pressure from the probe. Sometimes the doctor will ask you to turn onto your side or hold your breath for a few seconds — this makes the image clearer. Afterwards you can eat straight away and go back to your usual routine.

Checklist

Preparing for an abdominal ultrasound

Preparation is simple but important: how well the doctor can see the organs depends on it. If you were not able to prepare, let the administrator know — sometimes it is better to reschedule.

Before the examination

  • Do not eat for 6–8 hours before the examination — the easiest option is to come in the morning on an empty stomach.
  • 1–1.5 hours before the visit drink 0.5–1 l of water and do not urinate: the bladder must be full.
  • The day before, limit foods that cause gas: legumes, rye bread, milk, fizzy drinks, raw vegetables and fruit.
  • Take your medication as usual unless your doctor has told you otherwise. Avoid smoking on the morning of the examination.

What to bring

  • Reports from previous ultrasound scans — for comparison over time.
  • CT or MRI results, if you have them.
  • Recent blood and urine tests, discharge summaries and reports from other doctors.
  • A referral, if a doctor issued one — so the specialist can see the question being asked.

After the examination

Results and next steps

  • Report and images to take with you

The doctor writes the report right after the examination and explains what it says.

  • Ultrasound can be part of a Check-up

You can have the examination on its own or as part of a comprehensive health check. More about the Check-up programme.

  • The result is assessed in context

Ultrasound findings are considered together with your symptoms, examination and lab tests. A normal result does not rule out every possible problem — sometimes further tests are needed.

  • The report and a consultation are separate services

An ultrasound report describes the findings of the examination. If you need your situation reviewed and treatment prescribed, book a gastroenterologist consultation or another specialist — this is a separate service.

Equipment

Examination on the Canon Aplio i900

Abdominal ultrasound at Grand Medical is performed on the expert-class Canon Aplio i900 ultrasound system. Modern imaging technologies and colour Doppler mapping help assess the organs and blood flow in detail.

Image quality depends not only on the machine but also on preparation and individual factors — for example body build and the amount of gas in the bowel. The final report is always written by the doctor.

Diagnostic methods

What else may be needed for abdominal symptoms

Abdominal symptoms may call for additional tests or specialist consultations. What you need depends on your symptoms and test results — there is no need to do everything at once.

  • Breath test

    Helicobacter pylori test

    What it examines
The presence of Helicobacter pylori infection in the stomach — without gastroscopy.
    Helps answer
Whether H. pylori infection could be causing your stomach symptoms.
  • Doctor

    Internist consultation

    What it gives
An assessment of abdominal pain of unclear origin, accompanying symptoms and test results.
    Helps answer
Which causes need to be ruled out and which specialist to see next.
  • Doctor

    Gastroenterologist consultation

    What it gives
A review of digestive symptoms, lab tests and ultrasound findings.
    Helps answer
Which further tests or treatment are needed.
