About the doctor
Andris Norko is a radiologist specializing in ultrasound and TRUS. He has vast experience, and patients say it is easy to talk to him even about delicate topics. He explains things clearly, without unnecessary jargon and without rushing.
Andris worked for 38 years at Gaiļezers Hospital (RAKUS) and has trained residents there since 2000. He is an honorary member of the Latvian Association of Radiologists. At our clinic he performs ultrasound and TRUS, interprets the examinations and analyses the results.
Andris takes part in international conferences and European radiology congresses and applies what he learns in his work.
Areas of practice
Andris Norko performs ultrasound of the abdominal organs, thyroid and prostate, transrectal prostate ultrasound (TRUS), and also describes and analyses previous examinations. Ultrasound uses no radiation, so it can be repeated if needed. An appointment usually takes 15–20 minutes, and the doctor discusses the result with you straight away.

Liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen and kidneys — in a single appointment.

Size, structure and blood flow of the gland, nodules and their characteristics. Also used to monitor changes that have already been found.

Size and structure of the gland, residual urine volume. The examination is done through the skin or transrectally (TRUS) — with a thin probe that gives a clearer picture of the gland. It is especially useful for men to have the prostate checked regularly, even without symptoms. We will tell you how to prepare when you book.
Need advice on your results? The doctor describes and analyses previous examinations. Bring your earlier ultrasound, CT and MRI results, test results and doctors’ conclusions — this lets him see changes over time.
Both examinations are safe and use no radiation. The difference is in how the doctor approaches the gland and what can be seen.
How it is done: the probe is placed on the skin above the pubic bone, as in a standard abdominal ultrasound.
Preparation: a moderately full bladder is needed.
What it shows: a general assessment of the gland and, with a full bladder, the bladder itself.
Sensations: like a light massage.
How it is done: a thin probe is inserted through the rectum, so it sits right next to the gland.
Preparation: a micro-enema 2–3 hours before the appointment; a full bladder is not needed.
What it shows: a clearer picture of the gland and its structure.
Sensations: the examination is short, and the doctor performs it with care.
Which option is right for you will be advised by the doctor or administrator when you book — it usually depends on the referral and the purpose of the examination.

FAQ
TRUS is a prostate ultrasound using a thin probe that is inserted through the rectum. This lets the doctor see the gland very clearly. The examination is short and safe, and is carried out with care. You will receive detailed preparation advice when you book.
The main aim of preparation is to empty the rectum. A micro-enema on the day of the examination, ideally 2–3 hours before the appointment, is recommended; repeating it the evening before is not required. Come on an empty stomach; strict fasting for 6–8 hours before TRUS is not required.
A full bladder is not needed for the transrectal examination itself. If the bladder or residual urine is being assessed at the same time, come with a moderately full bladder.
An appointment usually takes 15–20 minutes. The doctor discusses the result with you right after the examination.
Ultrasound uses sound waves, not X-rays, so it can be repeated as needed. Ultrasound through the skin feels like a light massage, and TRUS is quick and performed with care.
If you have been referred for an ultrasound; need your prostate assessed; or need advice on the description or results of previous examinations. It is especially useful for men to have the prostate checked regularly, even without symptoms.
Any medical documents you have: results of previous ultrasounds, CT and MRI scans, test results (for example, PSA as ordered by a doctor), doctors’ conclusions and discharge summaries from medical institutions. This lets the doctor assess the situation more accurately and see changes over time.
