An appointment usually takes 15–20 minutes. The doctor discusses the result with you right after the examination.
Ultrasound uses sound waves, not X-rays, so it can be repeated as needed. The examination is painless: the doctor moves a probe over the skin with warm gel.
For example, if you have abdominal pain or discomfort or heaviness after eating; need your kidneys, bladder or prostate checked; have noticed a lump or thickening on the neck, in soft tissues or near the salivary glands; a doctor has ordered an ultrasound after changes in your test results; or you have pain or swelling in the scrotum area. Doctors also recommend an ultrasound once a year, even without complaints.
Ultrasound of the abdominal organs is done on an empty stomach: your last meal should be about 6 hours before the appointment. You may drink tea and water.
No special preparation is needed for other examinations.
Any medical documents you have: results of previous ultrasounds, CT and MRI scans, test results, doctors’ conclusions and discharge summaries from medical institutions. This lets the doctor assess the situation more accurately and see changes over time.
