About the doctor

Treat the person, not the diagnosis

Endocrinologist Iryna Kurylo follows a simple principle: treat the person, not the diagnosis.

At the appointment she listens carefully to the patient and explains in plain language what is happening in the body. No rush and no complicated terms — so that you understand where the symptoms come from and what to do about them.

Together with the patient, the doctor draws up a clear follow-up plan. It takes into account test results, lifestyle and your goals, not just the numbers on a laboratory report.

Iryna Kurylo advises on a wide range of issues — from the thyroid and diabetes to metabolism and hormonal balance. She combines deep knowledge of endocrinology with an individual approach to each person.

Patients value that the doctor knows how to listen, support and motivate. This is especially important in chronic conditions: here she sets up long-term follow-up and helps you keep the situation under control step by step.

It is not necessary to have any tests beforehand: the doctor can order an examination after the consultation. If you already have test results, bring them with you — the doctor will then assess the situation faster. Most often an endocrinologist is interested in thyroid hormones, glucose and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), a lipid profile and vitamin D, but the exact set depends on your question.

TSH is usually tested in the morning. Strict fasting is generally not required for TSH itself, but glucose and the lipid profile are tested on an empty stomach, so it is convenient to have everything done together in the morning while fasting. If you take thyroid hormones, ask the doctor whether to give blood before or after your morning tablet. It is also best to check the preparation rules with the laboratory.

Reasons may include persistent fatigue, unexplained weight change, palpitations, feeling cold or intolerance of heat, hair loss, cycle disorders, a lump-in-the-throat sensation or changes in the neck. A check is also useful when planning a pregnancy and if close relatives have thyroid disease.

Do not start or stop medicines on your own. A single abnormal result is not yet a diagnosis: the doctor will assess it together with other hormones, symptoms and medical history, order a repeat test or a thyroid ultrasound if needed, and explain whether treatment is required or monitoring is enough.

An online consultation is suitable for going over the results of tests and examinations, adjusting the follow-up plan or discussing a repeat visit. If the doctor needs to examine you or palpate the thyroid, she will suggest coming to an in-person appointment at the clinic.

Yes. The endocrinologist checks whether there are hormonal causes of weight gain — for example, thyroid or carbohydrate metabolism disorders. She then draws up a realistic plan with you: diet, physical activity and, where indicated, medication. If necessary, a dietitian can be involved.

Prediabetes is a condition in which blood sugar is already above normal but has not yet reached the level of diabetes mellitus. The good news is that at this stage the situation can often be changed: adjusting diet, losing weight and regular activity help. The doctor will advise which indicators to monitor and how often.

It depends on how stable the condition is and whether the treatment has been settled. At the start of treatment and after a dose change, visits and tests are usually needed more often, and when results are stable, less often. The doctor will draw up an individual monitoring schedule.

This is a sensible step, especially if you have thyroid disease, diabetes, excess weight or cycle disorders. The doctor will assess your hormonal background, adjust treatment in advance if needed and advise what to watch for during pregnancy. The endocrinologist also provides follow-up for gestational diabetes.

This is a calm, non-judgemental conversation: the doctor finds out your goals, your health and any existing test results, and discusses hormone therapy options and the follow-up plan. Everything you tell her remains confidential. To prepare medical documents you need a psychiatrist’s opinion — a psychiatrist consultation is available online at Grand Medical.

No referral is required.

I was pleasantly surprised how quickly I was able to book — especially considering I had only been in Latvia for a couple of days. Very convenient.

I have had ultrasound scans in many places, but I have never met such an attentive and professional approach. They explained everything, answered my questions, and you can feel that they care about the patient.
