Comprehensive health check-up: how to choose a check-up and where to start
Published 15 October 2026 · Updated 21 October 2026 · Grand Medical, Riga
A check-up is not the maximum number of tests and scans “just in case”. Its purpose is to help the doctor assess your individual risk factors, understand what really deserves attention, and put together a clear plan for what to do next.
A preventive check-up can be useful if you haven’t had a routine doctor’s visit for a long time, your health has changed, you have high blood pressure, excess weight, high cholesterol, diabetes, a family history of disease, or simply want a systematic assessment of your health.
At the same time, there is no single programme that suits everyone. The scope of a check-up depends on age, sex, complaints, chronic conditions, family history and the results you already have.
When to consider a check-up
It is worth discussing a check-up with a doctor if:
- you haven’t had a preventive check-up for a long time;
- your blood pressure is high or unstable;
- you are bothered by fatigue, reduced performance or changes in weight;
- you have high cholesterol, diabetes or risk factors for heart and vascular disease;
- there is a history of cardiovascular, endocrine or oncological disease in your family;
- you have chronic conditions and need a clear follow-up plan;
- you want to make sense of tests and results you already have.
There is no universal rule “for everyone”: how often and how extensively to be checked is decided by your doctor, based on your situation.
Which programmes are available at Grand Medical
Below are the main options. The content of any programme is selected individually, so these are guidelines rather than ready-made sets of tests.
Individual check-up
This is the main option for someone who wants to check their health but does not know where to start.
The programme is led by certified internal medicine physician Marina Bogdanova. At the first consultation, the doctor takes into account your complaints, age, lifestyle, family history and risk factors. Only justified laboratory tests and instrumental examinations are then prescribed. Once the results are ready, a follow-up consultation explains them and sets out an individual monitoring plan.
Ultrasound package: checking internal organs
Suitable when the doctor needs to assess particular organs and systems. The scope is selected according to indications and may include ultrasound of the abdomen, thyroid gland and urinary system, as well as breast or prostate ultrasound where indicated.
Heart and vascular check-up
Suitable for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, a family history of cardiovascular disease, or when you need to assess existing risks.
The programme may include a cardiologist consultation, laboratory tests and ECG, and — where indicated — echocardiography, 24- or 48-hour Holter monitoring, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) and duplex scanning of the vessels. After the tests, a follow-up cardiologist consultation takes place.

Who takes part in a check-up
- Marina Bogdanova — internal medicine physician; leads the individual check-up and coordinates the overall health assessment.
- Elena Shafro and Polina Andersone — cardiologists; consultations and assessment of cardiovascular risks.
- Alla Khachaturyants and Viktorija Snigura — ultrasound diagnostics; examination of organs and, where indicated, vessels and heart.
- If necessary, the doctor may recommend a consultation with an endocrinologist, gastroenterologist, neurologist, rheumatologist or another specialist.
Please check appointment times and specialist availability when booking: not every doctor can see patients on the day you get in touch.
An add-on to the check-up
Helicobacter pylori breath test
If you have stomach complaints, heartburn, pain or heaviness after eating, bloating, or for follow-up after treatment, a doctor may recommend a Helicobacter pylori breath test. It is available at the clinic and as a home kit, HelicoHome.
The test is prescribed as indicated and is not included in every check-up automatically.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral for a check-up?
A referral is not always required. You can start by booking a first consultation: the doctor will consider your complaints and risk factors and suggest the examinations you need. If you already have test results or reports, bring them with you.
How do I choose the right programme?
If you don’t know where to start, choose the individual check-up. If you have a specific goal — for example, to assess your heart and vessels or your internal organs — you can discuss a targeted programme. The final scope is decided by the doctor.
Can I do the examinations over more than one day?
Yes. Some tests and examinations are done on different days: timing depends on the chosen programme and when results are ready. The follow-up consultation takes place once the results are available.
Are echocardiography or Holter monitoring included for every patient?
No. These examinations are prescribed as indicated, not automatically for everyone. The doctor decides whether they are needed based on your complaints, risk factors and the results of the initial assessment.
Can I have a check-up with an insurance policy?
Coverage depends on the terms of your policy. We recommend checking with your insurer in advance which consultations and examinations are included, and letting the clinic know when you book.
Not sure where to start with a health check?
Start with an individual check-up: the doctor will help determine which examinations you really need.
You can also book through Piearsta.lv or eVeselībasPunkts.lv. If you can’t find a convenient time, contact the clinic.
