Why ultrasound and TRUS are calm and safe
TRUS is an ultrasound of the prostate with a slim probe. It lets the doctor see the gland very clearly. The examination is short and safe, and we will tell you how to prepare when you book.
- No radiation. No X-rays, just sound waves. The examination can be repeated if needed.
- Painless. Ultrasound through the skin feels like a light massage. TRUS is quick and delicate.
- Quick. The visit usually takes 15–20 minutes, and the doctor discusses the result with you right away.
- Once a year is a good habit. It is especially useful for men to check the prostate regularly, even if nothing bothers them.
How to prepare for TRUS
Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) is an ultrasound of the prostate using a thin probe inserted through the rectum. The main aim of preparation is to empty the rectum.
- A mini enema on the day of the examination. Ideally, do it 2–3 hours before your appointment. There is no need to repeat it the evening before.
- On an empty stomach. Please come on an empty stomach; strict fasting for 6–8 hours before TRUS is not required.
- Bladder. A full bladder is not needed for the transrectal examination itself. If the bladder or residual urine is being assessed at the same time, come with a moderately full bladder.
